Sherwin Paul S. Gonzales ( Philippines )

I often asked the meaning of art and always come up with the answer that art is an aesthetic expression of the heart, the tangible presentation of emotion. I was born an artist. My recollection as a child focused mainly on drawing figures of superheroes on the walls of our house. Throughout my elementary and high school I received several awards from different local art competitions. Then in college, I was touched by the political situation of our country. It was the beginning of surrealism that tackles the life of people. Sample painting was Send in the Clowns that act as an allegory of Philippine Politics. Later, I saw this as complex and simplified socio political issues by using simple still life, like coffee and pandesal, One masterpiece is Almusal ni Mano, which depicts the struggle of a common Filipino worker eating only a piece of bread in the morning before going to work.
Mano, a friend of mine, is now the vice president for operations of a mining company where he used to work as utility man.
After college, my romance with painting ended when I worked as an animator. In this work, I was trained in classical sketching in pencil and paper. Then I got married, and found the beauty of mother and child having been inspired by the sight of my wife and first born son. It was not only a representation of mother’s care to her child but also depicts the Freudian theory of Oedipus Complex—how a mother influenced child’s development.
Later I met an artist Carlo Valino, former professor of Anatomy in the UP College of Fine Arts. As an apprentice to Prof Valino, I learned the discipline of painting in a classical way. Then I met the AAP officials Fidel Sarmiento and Aris Bagtas who both encouraged me to go back to painting. From then, I started joining group exhibits and competitions again. Luckily, in 2009, I received the Senate Gold Medal Award for Artistic Excellence.
It was not long when our local art group though the NCCA, had a privilege to have a 3-day workshop with Sanso. This great artist encouraged me to continue painting the rock formations seen in the beaches of my hometown , Baler. Then came along Ver Cuizon (Tito Ver), the only Filipino curator and art Historian based in Europe who encouraged me to paint the local sceneries of Baler.
On June 30, 2012, through the National Historical Commission, National Museum and the Office of Senator Edgardo J Angara, I had a one man show entitled Portraits of Fortitude at Museo de Baler exhibiting the survivors of the Last Spanish Siege. This is in line with the 11th celebration of Filipino-Spanish Friendship Day.
I am one of the artists commissioned to work on the pieces (where I made 46 pieces) and the Filipino version of Singaporean Sling in Raffles, a s7-star Hotel in Makati City.
On March 22, 2013, I was awarded Champion of the on-the-spot painting contest in line with the 116th founding anniversary of the Philippine Army.
